Ulanfu (1906-1988, Wulanfu in pinyin), born in rural Inner Mongolia, became a member of the CCP in the 1920s and organised Mongol anti-Japanese guerilla forces in the 1930s. Elected to full membership in the Central Committee in 1956 and enters Politburo. Attacked and deposed by Red Guards during the early Cultural Revolution after they attempted to take control of government offices in Inner Mongolia - accused of 'ruling Inner Mongolia like a kingdom'. Rehabilitated in 1973. Reelected as Vice-Chairman of the PRC in 1983.
