After the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 a half-day holiday was granted to all primary schools, increased in 1956 to a full day. Fun activities and events are often arranged. The white banner at the top of the poster reads haohao xuexi, tiantian xiangshang (study well, make progress every day). The words for peace in several different languages are written on the orange ribbon. The photograph shows a group of children in Taicang, Jiangsu celebrating Children's Day in 1960 with their teacher, centre, holding a portrait of Mao.
