Contemporary Indian Products.
Studio Black Dot was set up to create beautiful home décor products from simple materials.
Mita, the designer behind the label, had been working as an interior designer for quite some time. She was looking for more avenues to express her creativity. She started thinking of making home décor products that were different, unique and exciting. Having made functional furniture pieces out of corrugated cardboard earlier, she found the material a joy to work with. Her thought now was to showcase the beauty of the material.
While most people see cardboard as a material used to lend strength or used for protection, Mita uses the material’s corrugation to create products with intricate layers and surfaces. Her handcrafted products include lamps, bowls, nesting boxes, wall plates and coasters. The products highlight the intricate pattern of the corrugation. Mita’s signature technique involves creating discs from thin cardboard strips and shaping the discs further to create the form that makes up the structure of the products. We describe it as ‘pottery with cardboard’.
Our products are Indian to the core, with the detail and intricacy of workmanship. Looking back, our products are also inspired by Scandinavian design, which is characterized by simplicity, minimalism and functionality. It goes hand in hand with natural materials, flawless craftsmanship and understated elegance. That is quite a unique blend!
